Pecan Storage Tips

Keep Your Pecans Fresh Longer

Pecans are naturally rich in healthy oils, which gives them their delicious buttery flavor — but it also means they should be stored properly to maintain freshness, texture, and aroma. For the best quality, Priester’s Pecans recommends storing pecans in the refrigerator or freezer.

Why Refrigerate or Freeze Pecans?

Cold storage helps:

  • Preserve fresh flavor and natural aroma.
  • Maintain color and texture.
  • Prevent pecans from becoming rancid.
  • Protect against potential insect infestation

Because pecans are naturally low in moisture (about 4%), freezing does not damage their quality or texture.

Best Practices at a Glance

  • Keep pecans cold (fridge for short-term, freezer for long-term).
  • Use airtight containers or the original sealed bags.
  • Store away from strong odors — pecans absorb flavors.
  • Label & date your containers, then rotate older stock first.
  • Thaw only what you need; unused nuts can be safely refrozen.

Recommended Storage Methods

Refrigerating Pecans

Pecans purchased from Priester’s Pecans may be refrigerated directly in their original packaging. Airtight containers, such as jars or sealed food-storage containers, also work well.

Refrigerated pecans stay fresher longer while remaining ready to use for snacking, baking, and cooking.

Freezing Pecans

Freezing is the best option for long-term storage. Pecans freeze exceptionally well and may be safely refrozen multiple times without harming quality or texture.

For best results:

  • Store in airtight packaging.
  • Remove as much excess air as possible.
  • Keep containers tightly sealed.

Before Using Frozen Pecans

Allow pecans to come to room temperature before opening the container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on the nuts and preserves texture and flavor.

Signs Pecans Have Gone Rancid

Pecans should smell sweet and nutty. Discard pecans if they:

  • Smell sour, musty, or paint-like.
  • Appear unusually oily.
  • Taste bitter or unpleasant.
